The Multicultural Health Institute is devoted to the research and dissemination of information regarding multicultural health issues, with a goal of improving healthcare delivery through greater understanding among all parties involved.  Founded in California in 1995, the organization has conducted programs on the local, state and national levels.  We have consulted with organizations such as the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers Association (PHARMA), National Medical Association (NMA), Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC), National Institutes Of Health, Morehouse School of Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control REACH collaborative.

MHI BOARD

Lisa Merritt, M.D., Founder and Executive Director

Dr. Merritt obtained her medical degree from Howard University after completing undergraduate studies at Georgetown University with honors.  She underwent training in family and community medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and then completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Merritt has authored numerous articles in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation, multicultural health issues as well as complementary medicine topics.  She has lectured nationally and internationally on multicultural health issues.  She is currently serving in collaboration with The National Cobb Institute and Genesis Health Services on several projects as their community medical director. 

 

Curtis Yew, CPA, Treasurer

Mr. Yew completed his studies at the University of California, Berkeley in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business with an emphasis in Accounting. He currently practices in public accounting in Grass Valley, California. Mr. Yew has served as a board member since the inception of MHI and maintains the accounting records for the organization.

 

Teresa Petterson, MD, MPA, Secretary

Dr. Pettersen completed her studies at La Universidad del Noreste (UNE), Tampico , Mexico and at New York University (NYU), New York , New York . She works as Clinical Faculty in the Problem-based Learning (PBL) Program at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM)- Bradenton in Bradenton , Florida .  Newly elected to the board, her areas of expertise include Health Service Management. She will be instrumental in furthering development of our mentoring and cross cultural health literacy programs.

 

STAFF

Dorcelle Batch, RN, Project Coordinator. 

Dorcel retired from a 30 year career in full time nursing.  She is a certified counselor in HIV/AIDS, and has extensive experience in women’s health issues.  Ms. Batch along with a cadre of 5 volunteers, helps to coordinate the gatekeeper project, infant mortality project, as well as administrative issues relevant to the MHI.

 

Carroll Hunter, B.A., Project Coordinator

Carroll has worked in the GLBT community for many years. Organizer of the first Gay High School Student Organization at his high school in the Bronx, he went on to lead the New York City Police Gay and Lesbian police officer’s association.  A Cum Laude B.A. graduate of Lehman College with a masters in counseling psychology from Hunter College, he eventually became Deputy Director in the Riker’s Island jail complex.  There he was directly responsible for the welfare and programs for several thousand inmates, improved library conditions and initiated educational courses and he created the first condom distribution program in the jails.  Mr. Hunter has received many honors and awards including in 1998, New York’s prestigious “Courage and Dignity Award” for lifetime service to the GLBT community.  He is 500/501 certified and coordinator of the Sarasota/Manatee community gatekeeper programs.
